If you need fence in an area of your garden or critter enclosure, an inexpensive and easy to build wire mesh fence may be your best option. You can purchase a gate for your wire fence, but with a little work, you can also save some money by building your own gate. A gate is essentially a supported rectangle with wire mesh attached to it.
Step 1
Use a tape measure to measure the opening between the door posts to determine the width and height of the door. Make the door about an inch smaller than the width of the opening to allow the door to move freely.
Step 2
Using a saw, cut the 2×4 into two pieces equal to the width of the fence. Also cut two pieces that are three inches smaller than the height of the door.
Step 3
Place the four pieces of wood in a rectangle or square, depending on the size of the door. Place the opening pads of the corner clamps on the two adjacent boards. Turn the handles on the corner clamps to close the pads and hold the boards at a perfect right angle. Drill two three-inch wood screws into the boards to hold them together. Repeat the process for each corner.
Step 4
Measure the distance between the two vertical boards on the door frame you just made. Cut a length equal to 2x4 of this measurement. Place this panel directly in the middle of the frame so that the end of the panel is next to the side of the frame. Drill 3" wood screws into this support plate from the outside of the vertical door panel.
Step 5
Measure the two distances between the center support and the top and bottom of the door frame. Cut two 2×4 pieces equal to the length of each measurement. Install these two pieces between the center bracket and the door frame. The second vertical bracket must be screwed into the center bracket at an angle. You have a door frame with a bracket that looks like a plus sign.
Step 6
Use a wire cutter to cut a piece of wire mesh to the exact size of the door frame. Place the grid on the frame and staple the fabric to the wood. Install staples at least every six inches.
